Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be cleaner or waitress in order for them to be able to survive. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She left the institution she was in within two years of her education to pursue a career as an actor. Her path wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. She then worked as a hat check girl at the nightclub before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first permanent acting gig. Drama studies led her to earn her degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
